When a camera inspection shows a sewer lateral that has collapsed, lost its shape, or corroded through along the bottom, lining is off the table. A liner needs a host pipe to cure against, and there is no longer enough pipe there to host anything.
The old answer was a trench from the house to the street. Pipe bursting is the modern one: full replacement, same path, two small pits.
How it actually works
A cable is threaded through the existing line and connected to a conical bursting head. A hydraulic winch then pulls that head through the pipe. As it travels, the cone fractures the old pipe outward, pressing the fragments into the surrounding soil, while the new HDPE pipe fused to the back of the head is drawn into the void it creates.
The new line arrives in one continuous piece. HDPE sections are heat-fused before the pull, so the finished pipe has no joints along its length — which, as with lining, removes the entry route that roots and groundwater rely on.
The upsizing advantage
This is the capability lining does not have. Because bursting displaces soil rather than working within the old bore, the replacement pipe can be larger than the original.
That matters more often than people expect in this area. Plenty of homes in Montgomery and Prince George’s County have been extended, had basements finished, or gained a bathroom or two since the lateral went in. A line sized for a 1955 fixture count can be genuinely undersized for a 2026 household — and no amount of cleaning fixes a diameter problem.
When bursting is the right call
- The line has collapsed or lost structural shape
- Severe bellies are holding standing water and solids
- Cast iron has corroded through along the invert — the bottom of the pipe is gone
- The lateral is undersized for the home’s current fixture count
- Damage is too extensive along the run for a liner to bridge
When it is not
Bursting needs room to displace soil, and it needs a clear path. It is generally unsuitable where the line runs unusually close to a gas main, a water service or a structural foundation, and it will not follow a new route — like lining, it works along the pipe that is already there.
Soil type matters too. Very dense or rocky ground resists displacement. The clay soils common across much of this region are usually workable, but that is a determination made on site, not assumed.
What to expect on your property
You will get two compact excavations — usually one near the house connection and one near the public main — rather than a continuous open trench. Both are backfilled and compacted when the work is done.
Most residential bursting jobs complete in a day. Sewer lateral replacement requires WSSC permitting and inspection, which we handle as part of the job, and we will tell you up front if permit lead time affects your schedule.
The practical outcome is the one that matters: the driveway, the patio and the trees are still there when we leave.
