Pipe bursting is a full sewer line replacement, so it sits at the higher end of trenchless pricing. The comparison worth making is not bursting against lining — in most cases only one of those is technically appropriate for your pipe. It is bursting against digging a trench down the length of your property.
What the market data shows
Published 2026 cost reporting puts pipe bursting in Maryland broadly in the $4,000 to $20,000 range per project. That spread is wide because it covers everything from a short, shallow suburban lateral to a long, deep run under hardscape.
Like all trenchless work, it is quoted per linear foot. Trenchless methods generally are reported as reducing total cost by 20–40% against traditional excavation where access allows.
Why per-foot pricing
The new HDPE pipe, the winch time and the labour all scale with run length. A 30-foot lateral and a 90-foot lateral differ by a factor of three in material alone, and a single lump sum hides that.
It also makes quotes comparable. Given a per-foot rate and a stated run length, you can check the arithmetic. Given a bare figure, you cannot — so ask for the breakdown.
The seven variables
- Run length — the primary driver.
- Pit depth — a connection at twelve feet needs shoring; one at four does not.
- Pipe diameter, and whether you are upsizing.
- Soil conditions — dense or rocky ground resists displacement and slows the pull.
- Equipment access — a winch and excavator need a route to both pits.
- Surface restoration at the two pit locations.
- WSSC permitting and inspection, which lateral replacement requires.
Bursting versus open-cut, properly compared
An open-cut quote covers excavation and pipe. What it frequently covers vaguely, or not at all, is putting your property back together.
Consider a lateral that crosses a driveway apron, runs under lawn, and passes within a few feet of a mature oak. Open-cut means a trench through all three: a driveway section cut out and repoured, the full trench length re-turfed, and real risk to a tree that predates the house.
Bursting puts a pit at each end and leaves the middle untouched. Across most of Bethesda, Chevy Chase and older Silver Spring, that difference is not a rounding error — it is frequently the largest single number in the comparison.
Is upsizing worth paying for?
If the camera shows your lateral is undersized for the home’s current fixture count, yes — decisively. The incremental cost is larger pipe material and marginally more pull resistance.
Doing it later as a separate job means paying again for the pits, the mobilisation, the permitting and the restoration. If your line is correctly sized, upsizing buys you nothing, and we will say so.
