For most of the twentieth century, fixing a sewer lateral meant one thing: dig it up. A machine opened a trench from the house to the street, the old pipe came out, a new one went in, and the homeowner spent the following spring rebuilding a lawn. In Montgomery and Prince George’s County, where a lot of that pipe is now sixty to a hundred years old, that was simply the cost of the repair.
Trenchless methods changed the arithmetic. Instead of exposing the pipe to work on it, the work happens from inside the pipe, through access points that already exist or through one or two compact pits. The lawn, the driveway and the trees stay where they are.
This guide explains what the term actually covers, because "trenchless" is not one technique — it is two quite different ones that solve two different problems.
The two methods, plainly
CIPP lining — a new pipe inside the old one
Cured-in-place pipe lining is the method most people mean when they say trenchless. A flexible liner saturated with resin is drawn into the existing pipe, inflated so it presses against the pipe wall, and cured until it hardens. What you end up with is a continuous, jointless pipe formed inside the old one.
The jointless part matters more than it sounds. In this region, the two things that kill sewer laterals are root intrusion and groundwater infiltration, and both enter through joints. A lined pipe has no joints for them to enter through — the failure mode is designed out rather than postponed.
Pipe bursting — full replacement, two pits
Pipe bursting is for lines that are past saving. A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outward into the surrounding soil, while a new seamless HDPE pipe is drawn into the space behind it. It needs an entry pit and an exit pit — typically one near the house and one near the connection — rather than a trench along the full run.
Because it replaces rather than relines, bursting also lets us increase the diameter. If your home has gained bathrooms since the lateral went in, that is often the deciding factor.
Which one applies to your pipe
This is not a preference question. It is determined by the condition of the pipe, and it is settled by camera, not by conversation.

Why it usually wins on total cost
Compared line-for-line, trenchless and open-cut are often closer than people expect. The difference shows up in everything that is not plumbing.
An open-cut replacement on a typical Bethesda or Chevy Chase property does not just cost the excavation and the pipe. It costs the section of driveway that has to be cut and repoured, the lawn along the whole trench, the plantings in the way, and — if the trench passes through the root plate — potentially a mature tree that cannot be bought back at any price.
Trenchless removes nearly all of that from the bill. The rule of thumb is simple: the more finished surface sits above your sewer line, the more decisively no-dig wins. Under open lawn the two are genuinely competitive. Under a driveway or a century-old garden, they are not close.
What actually happens on the day
- Camera inspection of the full lateral, cleanout to main, with the defect located and depth-marked on the surface.
- Cleaning — descaling and hydro jetting, because a liner only bonds to a clean pipe wall.
- Installation: the liner is drawn in and inflated, or the bursting head and new pipe are pulled through.
- Curing or tie-in, depending on method.
- A second camera pass to prove the result, with the footage handed to you.
Most residential jobs finish inside a single day. Expect your water to be off for a few hours while the liner cures or the new pipe is pulled — that is the main disruption, and it is worth planning around.
Permits and WSSC
Sewer lateral work in Montgomery and Prince George’s County falls under WSSC Water jurisdiction. Structural repairs and replacements require permitting and inspection, and the work has to be done by someone licensed to pull those permits.
This is not paperwork you want skipped. Unpermitted sewer work has a habit of surfacing during a home sale, at which point it can stall the transaction or have to be redone properly at your expense. We handle permitting as part of the job and tell you up front if it affects the schedule.
When trenchless is the wrong answer
Any contractor who tells you no-dig is always better has stopped diagnosing. Open-cut is still correct when the line needs rerouting rather than restoring, when a belly has to be regraded, when the damage is a single shallow spot where a short dig is genuinely cheaper, or when there is no viable access for the equipment.
